Card Authorization and Capture

Reference entry · last updated 20260910

Card authorization is the issuer’s approval of a requested payment, typically with a hold on available funds or credit. Capture submits an authorized amount for collection.[1]

1. First principles: approval and collection

An authorization creates a limited opportunity to capture a payment. Its validity depends on the card network and transaction type. An expired, uncaptured hold releases the reserved amount.[1]

2. Capture options

A merchant can capture an eligible authorization in full or in part. Multiple captures require specific support; Stripe documents them as available for only some card payments. The gateway’s transaction status and capture deadline govern the next permitted operation.[1]

3. Cancellation and refund

Cancellation stops an uncaptured payment. After capture, returning a payment generally uses a refund. Refund availability and processing depend on the payment’s status and provider.[2]

4. Settlement and payout

Capture, clearing, settlement, and payout describe different stages. Adyen’s documented “Settled” status means it has received the funds; merchant payout is a separate event.[3]
